On Monday, January 10th, Shalom Weiss and his daughter, Mrs. Rivky Neuhaus, met with former President Donald J. Trump at Mar-a-Lago. Mr. Weiss and Mrs. Neuhaus expressed their profound gratitude for the former President’s compassionate commutation of Mr. Weiss’s unprecedented 845-year sentence to time served.
As a token of appreciation, Mrs. Neuhaus, an artist, presented President Trump with a portrait she created of him at the Western Wall, the ancient and sacred site in Jerusalem, Israel.
Mr. Weiss was sentenced in 2000 to the longest white-collar money laundering sentence in history. His release on January 20th, 2021, was made possible through President Trump’s generous use of his pardon powers.
During his time in prison, Mr. Weiss faced significant health challenges, including a serious illness and, shortly after his return home, a stroke. His doctors believe that President Trump’s decision to release him from prison was life-saving.
Mr. Weiss’s case is extraordinary, involving appeals to international bodies such as the United Nations and the European Court of Human Rights. The Republic of Austria deemed his extreme sentence a violation of human dignity, prompting three separate Austrian Chancellors to write to three U.S. Presidents advocating for his commutation. Numerous notable figures, including Rabbi Arthur Scheiner, Austria’s Chief Rabbi Chaim Eisenberg, attorney Jay Sekulow, Professor Alan Dershowitz, Professor Roger Plunk, and bipartisan members of Congress, also fought tirelessly for his release.
Importantly, Mr. Weiss made full restitution, a fact President Trump noted in his pardon.
“On behalf of myself, my four siblings, our spouses, and approximately 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we present this painting as a small token of our respect for former President Trump and our heartfelt appreciation for returning the patriarch of our family to us.
A few short weeks after his joyous homecoming, my father suffered a stroke. Thank God he was with his family and was able to reach the hospital in record time. The doctors told us that if he hadn’t received lifesaving treatment as quickly as he did, he would not be here with us today.
The Talmud teaches that whoever saves a life is as if they saved the entire world. For our family, our father is our world. In this way, Mr. President, you have truly saved our entire world.
The image of you praying at the Western Wall evokes powerful emotions. It is clear from your expression that you carry the weight not only of the United States but of the entire world on your shoulders, turning to the Master of the Universe for guidance.
During your time in office, you demonstrated true leadership, courage, and integrity. We pray that God grants you many more years of good health and the ability to continue using your extraordinary talents for the benefit of mankind.”
